Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only charity in the UK dedicated exclusively to researching blood cancers and disorders including leukaemia, Hodgkin’s and other lymphomas, and myeloma.
110,000 people, children and adults alike, are living with these cancers today. 24,500 people are newly diagnosed with one of these conditions every year. Leukaemia Research are committed to giving every one of them the best chance of survival.
Their scientists and doctors work in over fifty top research centres across the UK. They are seeking to improve diagnosis of blood disorders and treatments for patients, and to find a cure for blood cancers.
They support patients, their families and friends by providing them a free information service including a range of over 40 publications.
They need to raise more than £100 million over the next five years to sustain their investment. They receive no Government grants and their life-saving research depends entirely on voluntary donations.
ACTION MEDICAL RESEARCH - for Children, for Life
Action Medical Research - for Children, for Life was originally founded in 1952, by Duncan Guthrie, in his quest to find a cure for polio, a condition that blighted the lives of many thousands of children including his own daughter Janet. Early research funded by the charity led to the development and rapid adoption of the first polio vaccine which eradicated new cases of the disease in the UK.
Since then the charity has developed an extraordinary track record in supporting some of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent history – breakthroughs that have helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more.
We find and fund the very best medical research to help save and change children’s lives. Our research covers three vital areas of unmet medical need to help babies, children and young people.
Although the research we have funded has helped save and change so many children’s lives, there is still so much more to learn about what triggers diseases, how to prevent them and how to develop effective new treatments and find the best ways to care for sick babies and children. Today, Action Medical Research plays a vital role as the leading UK-wide medical research charity dedicated to helping babies and children.
How we work
The charity finds and funds some of the best medical research in the world for the benefit of babies, children and young people. Our gold standard scientific review process ensures that we only fund the best doctors and researchers in children’s hospitals, specialist units and universities across the UK.
Our broad programme aims to both understand the causes of disease and disability and improve treatment and care. We believe the best ideas come from doctors working with patients on a day to day basis and the leading researchers who strive to advance medical knowledge to help save lives. That is why we only support the highest quality applications for research funding from hospitals and universities across the UK. Our flexibility also means we can take advantage of new technologies and respond to emerging needs or new ideas.
We also support promising doctors and researchers early in their careers through our prestigious Research Training Fellowships ensuring high quality research both now and in the future. This scheme is vital as it is recognised that there is a shortage of researchers in obstetrics, paediatrics and child health in the UK.
We are committed to assessing the impact of the research we support and sharing the results with other doctors, researchers and families.
We work in partnership with other charities to help maximise our impact in child health. For example, we are funding the first major UK scientific study into multiple sclerosis (MS) in children together with the MS Society, in the hope of making a significant step forward in understanding this disabling condition.
